You want to give your scalp some attention, but the shelf offers two very different things: a serum that disappears between sections of your hair and a scrub you can feel beneath your fingertips. They are not interchangeable experiences, and neither should be an automatic addition to every wash.
First, decide what you want from the step
Some people dislike scrub particles because they struggle to get the product past their hair or rinse every grain away. Others genuinely enjoy a hands-on massage and prefer a textured formula. That preference matters. An occasional treatment is more useful when you can apply it properly and comfortably.
Weekly Scalp Reset: a no-grit pre-wash serum
Weekly Scalp Reset is a short-contact lactic-acid serum. Part dry hair, apply along the scalp, massage gently, leave for three to five minutes, rinse thoroughly and then shampoo. Its formula includes lactic acid and sodium hyaluronate, and it contains no physical scrub particles or added fragrance.
Choose this format if you want scalp-surface exfoliation without working grains through your hair. It is not a shampoo: the follow-up wash still performs the cleansing step.
Deep Scalp Cleanse: a physical pre-wash scrub
Deep Scalp Cleanse is a creamy occasional scrub with kaolin clay and sour cherry shell powder. Part wet hair, place the formula directly on the scalp, massage gently with fingertips rather than nails, leave for five to fifteen minutes, rinse thoroughly and shampoo afterwards. The particles need to reach the scalp, not simply coat the strands.
Choose this format if you prefer physical exfoliation and are happy to take time with application and rinsing. It is not a stand-alone shampoo or a treatment for dandruff.
Should you use both?
We do not recommend making both products part of the same treatment session. They are two approaches to an occasional scalp step, not a mandatory double cleanse. Start with one, follow its directions and see how your scalp feels before deciding whether the step deserves a place in your routine.
When to skip exfoliation
Do not exfoliate a sore, irritated or broken scalp. If a product causes burning or discomfort, rinse it off and stop. Persistent flaking, redness or itching can have causes that a cosmetic scrub or serum will not address; seek appropriate professional advice rather than repeatedly exfoliating.
Make the next wash simple
Whichever treatment you choose, finish with a regular shampoo focused on the roots, such as Clean Wash, and condition the lengths separately if needed. You do not need a complicated ritual to use a treatment well.
