Scalp buildup: the signs, the causes and a simple weekly reset

You washed yesterday, and your roots already feel heavy. Your hair looks dull at the crown, and the fresh feeling after a wash seems shorter every week. Often, the answer is not your shampoo. It is what has been left behind on your scalp.

What buildup is

Buildup is the slow layering of everything that ends up at your roots: dry shampoo, styling products, leave-ins that drift too high, and your scalp's own oil. A regular wash removes most of it. Over time, some can stay behind.

The signs

  • Roots that feel coated or waxy even after washing.
  • Hair that goes flat sooner than it used to.
  • A dull look at the crown and along your part.
  • Products that seem to work less well than they did.

What causes it

  • Several days of dry shampoo in a row.
  • Heavier styling products at the roots.
  • Conditioner or leave-ins applied too close to the scalp.
  • Rinsing too quickly on wash day.

A simple weekly reset

  1. Once a week, before you wash, use a gentle exfoliant on your scalp.
  2. Massage with your fingertips, never your nails.
  3. Rinse thoroughly, then shampoo your roots and scalp as usual.
  4. Condition your ends only, so nothing heavy settles at the roots again.
Clear the scalp once a week, and every other day gets easier.

Two ways to do it

Without grit: Weekly Scalp Reset is our exfoliating scalp serum. Lactic acid gently helps lift product buildup, and sodium hyaluronate adds lightweight hydration. Apply it along parts on a dry scalp, leave it for three to five minutes, then rinse and wash. Once or twice a week.

For heavier weeks: Deep Scalp Cleanse is our exfoliating scalp scrub, with kaolin clay and sour cherry shell. Use it on wet hair and scalp, massage gently, leave it for five to fifteen minutes, then rinse and wash. Not more than once a week.

When to see a professional

Buildup should feel like product on your scalp, nothing more. If your scalp is itchy, flaking, red or sore, please see a dermatologist rather than exfoliating more.

Quick answers

How do I know if I have scalp buildup?

Your roots feel coated or heavy soon after washing, and your hair goes flat or dull sooner than it used to.

How often should I exfoliate my scalp?

Once a week is enough for most people. Our serum can be used once or twice a week, and our scrub not more than once a week.

Does dry shampoo cause buildup?

It can, if you use it for many days in a row. Refresh for a day or two, then wash.
